I Worked for Free

Over a decade ago, hustling in corporate was my reality.

I was overworked. I was overtired. And I was totally OVER IT!

After discovering the potential of online business, I started my side-hustle as a Virtual Assistant.

And I’m ashamed to admit that I charged my very first client...NOTHING.

Yup, I worked for free.

Today, I look back and can’t believe I did that!

But I believed that I needed to “get experience first” or “get some wins under my belt” before I could charge anything (even though I had an MBA, had run a successful landscaping company, and had a 3-year career in corporate - I know!)

And then when I did get paying clients and built up my roster as a VA, I often found myself in the cycle of being a do-er, a yes woman, going above and beyond for my clients even though it meant sacrificing the things I said I wanted: time with my kids, time for myself, flexibility, and vacations!

I was “on call” all the time because I believed that I needed to do all the things for my toxic clients who were slowly killing my soul.

And I would have been stuck in a cycle of undercharging and overworking, never making enough at my side-hustle to leave my corporate job...selling myself and my skills short…not realizing my worth…

UNTIL ONE DAY,
I FINALLY HIT MY BREAKING POINT.

By the time I had my first baby on the way, I realized this was totally unsustainable as part of the vision I had for the future of my growing family.

That’s when I realized…

I had the skills.

I just needed the confidence...and confidence comes by doing.

So I set out to prove to myself that I could do it.

I fired the toxic clients.

I stepped into that bigger role that I wanted for myself as an OBM.

I doubled, then tripled my rates, from $35 an hour to $100 or more.

Eventually I completely ditched the dollar-for-hour model and started charging for my expertise, not my time.

My business boomed and because I was taking the weight off my clients and freeing them up to do what they wanted to do, they were happy to pay.

SINCE THEN I’VE BEEN ABLE TO...
